Hi guys,

I own a 504 station wagon. Is not in good shape and I hope to self restored it step by step.

First of all, I'm going to get the workshop manual through ebay or somewhere. Any advice for me to kick start my project?

By the way, where can I order parts for 504?

Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason,

Glad to hear your keeping a 504 going too. Haynes do a 504 manual, although in detail the Autobooks version is better. You can buy then for about £5 on ebay plus postage.

You don't say where you are, so advising of parts is not so straight forward. In the UK there are several parts sources. Peugeot still have some 504 parts.

504's can last a long time, you say yours in not in good shape, can you give some more detail.

Mat

I'm from Malaysia (right hand drive car). Well, the condition of the car now is, it is full of rust and the car is not able to start. I haven't work on the car yet. But I'm preparing to do so after I get hold of the manuals and etc. etc.

I was browsing the ebay for Autobooks 504, with no luck.

504,

Is this the book you refering to, "Peugeot 504 Owners Workshop Manual: Autobook 783" ??

If YES, I don't see if it stated for my 504 1980. Mostly 1968-70, 1970-74, 1970-75 or other year, non 1980. Mine is 1980, stationwagon carb engine.

Hi, yes thats the one. My 504 is 1978 but I find the Autobooks manual goes in to much more detail, where as the Haynes says go to your Peugeot dealer! Get a copy of both.

The 504 europe models didnt really change at all during production. Around 1980? they got a different steering rack.

I would at the rear of the car. Look what type of rear drive you have, is it a standard axle, or does it have independant suspension and drive shafts?

If its the drive shaft version, examine the rubber drive shaft boots closely for signs of wear/cracks/holes. If they need renewing then its best to be thinking about removing the axle, at the same time giving attention to the rust on the bottom side of the car. Remove the spare wheel carrier and the fuel tank too, they will hide all sorts of rust.

Examine the floor pans and seals. 504s rot in the bulk head and bottom on the front door pillars. This is because rain water enters the grill between the windscreen and the bonnet, and should run out the bottoms of the front wings. The drain holes get blocked and they just fill with water and rot. Remove the panel in front the windscreen and examine closely. You may have to remove the front wings to get the full extent of the rot.

The bottom of the doors rust out. In the boot this is prone to rust too.

good luck!

The are all the same, just later editions of each other. Go for the top one as it cover up to 1982.

504,

Well i tried to start my car today, but the car won't start. What I did was,

1. Use a new battery
2. Fil up about 1liter of petrol
3. Start the car.

The engine does crank, but it wont start. I also did another thing which is to pour abit of petrol into the carb to get it started. It work, but only started for a few seconds, then it died.

Any advice?

After a long period of time, the fuel tank and fuel lines will be a bit rusty, I would image they are clogged up. I would disconnect the fuel line at the carb and fit a bottle/container with a pipe to the carb instead. Be sure its safe and wont catch fire! If running the engine it would be advisable to check the coolant in the engine/raditator too.

I would say change the oil if you can. I would also turn the engine over by hand with the spark plugs taken out to ensure nothing is seized up. Clean the spark plugs reset the gaps. Check the distributor cap and leads, also that you have a spark!

504,

To disconnect the fuel line at the carb, I assume i do not by pass the fuel regulator, right? By the way how is the carb going to "suck" the petrol in if I do a by pass?

By the way, what's the socket size I need to remove the spark plug?
