Why you should use BARDAHL Oil Additives?

Answer :
The addition of B-1, B-2, BARDAHL SPECIAL DUTY, or one of the BARDAHL NO-SMOKE products into your crankcase will improve lubrication and restore the level of “VI IMPROVER” while maintaining the viscosity at or above the original level.

The viscosity level is a key element in the ability of a motor oil to adequately lubricate an engine’s key parts and after time will lower due to extended use.

Understanding the effect of additives like BARDAHL B-2 Oil Treatment, for example, on viscosity characteristics of a multi-grade (viscosity) motor oil is important. Many people believe that an oil treatment product like Bardahl B-2 will destroy or distort the viscosity characteristics of a multi-grade oil. BARDAHL oil additives will not destroy nor negatively affect the viscosity characteristics of a multi-grade oil. To better understand the value of BARDAHL oil additives, a brief discussion of the properties and behavior of a multi-viscosity motor oil is appropriate.

Mono-grade viscosity motor oils (i.e., SAE-20, SAE-40, etc.) are blends of base oils and performance additives. Multi-viscosity motor oils add an additional component, the viscosity index improver (VI improver). These VI improvers are responsible for “stretching” the performance range of the oil over several viscosity grades (10W-30, 20W-50, etc.)

The addition of a product like BARDAHL No-Smoke increases the amount of VI improver in the crankcase. This will thicken the oil at all temperatures but relatively more at the higher temperatures. This increase in viscosity does the following:
• Raises the engine’s oil pressure,
• Improves the load carrying ability of the oil, and
• Reduces oil consumption and smoking.

As noted above, the oil is also thickened at low temperatures but much less in comparison to high temperatures. A typical motor oil might gain one full viscosity grade at high temperatures and ½ grade at low temperatures. For example a 10W-30 might become a 15W-40 after the addition of B/2 or No Smoke. You will see similar improvements with the Bardahl Special Duty, but to a lesser degree.

Another factor to understand is the gradual loss of high temperature viscosity during normal operation of multi-viscosity oils. This is due to a combination of “shearing” of the VI improver and fuel dilution of the crankcase. This “shearing” can be described as the destruction of the VI improver’s physical structure such that it is no longer capable of effectively thickening the oil. It is not uncommon for a quality motor oil to lose one whole viscosity grade during a normal drain interval, a 10W-40 might be reduced to a 10W-30 after a few thousand miles. Since lower viscosity oils are consumed more rapidly, you may be running your vehicle on a less-than adequate motor oil.

Over time, wear on an engine’s components can mean a gradual loss of power and performance.

By adding the following Bardahl products to your oil, you can be sure your engine is protected from wear, damage and loss of performance:

When should you select B-1, B-2 or NO-SMOKE

Answer :
BARDAHL B-1 is recommended for newer cars and BARDAHL B-2 for older cars, however the actual difference between the two, in terms of usage, is not necessarily determined at a specific mileage. It could depend on how the vehicle has been driven, how well it has been maintained and the quality of the oil used in the engine. All of these factors influence the amount of engine wear over time.

As a general rule, we think a customer should start using BARDAHL B-2 when one of the following conditions occur:

1. Oil consumption between oil changes surpasses 1 Qt/L.
2. Oil pressure (indicated by gauge or light) starts to drop due to wear in bearings, extreme ambient temperatures, or excessively long oil drain interval.
3. When extra oil viscosity is required during heavy-duty use or during periods of extremely high summer temperatures.

Although BARDAHL B-2 is often thought of as an additive for older cars with oil consumption problems it is also useful as an oil supplement for specific applications during summer and under heavy-duty use. The extra viscosity B-2 provides will help improve oil pressure, protect the engine and insure adequate lubrication.


For cars with severe oil consumption problems, we recommend BARDAHL NO-SMOKE because of its superior performance. When compared to B-2, No-Smoke has superior performance in reducing smoke and oil consumption. This improved performance combined with the excellent VI package improves combustion, power and performance in older vehicles
