306 d turbo lucas pump question!

Can anyone please tell me what the little micro switch on top of the throttle assembly on the pump does. Its the one at the very top which opens and closes as the throttle is moved. Its a little black box with a small plug like switch whickh looks variable. Thanks very much if you can shed any light!
